FuelCell Energy, Inc.(NASDAQ:FCEL), the leading manufacturer of ultra-clean, efficient and reliable power plants, today directed the Direct FuelCell® power plant, that provide renewable hydrogen gas for vehicle fueling along with ultra-clean electricity for the Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) in Fountain Valley, California.
The power plant converts the biogas generated from the wastewater treatment into ultra-clean electricity which is used by the OCSD and renewable hydrogen gas for an on-site vehicle fueling station operated by Air Products.
The key participants in the project includes the FuelCell Energy, Air Products and the National Fuel Cell Research Center at the University of California Irvine ,having the support from California Air Resources Board (CARB), South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Southern California Gas Company.
An inauguration event was held at the OCSD facility today, to demonstrate the renewable hydrogen vehicle fueling station and the Direct FuelCell power plant. The State and Federal legislators along with leaders from the DOE, CARB, SCAQMD and OCSD attended the inauguration.
The company generated Biogas from wastewater treatment process at OCSD. DFC power plants converted this biogas into hydrogen, which was used to generate a pollution free power in an electro-chemical process. The hydrogen obtained from the biogas however was not used to generate electricity.
The power plant generated around 250 kilowatts of ultra-clean power, enough to supply power to about 200 homes on an average and renewable hydrogen gas could fuel approx. 25 vehicles per day.
